Hot Air Balloon Fiesta Tips

This morning I was reminiscing about the spur of the moment trip Jordan and I took to New Mexico last October. I had always wanted to go to the hot air balloon festival in Albuquerque, and we finally decided to go. We managed to find a hotel room last minute, for pretty cheap, so we hopped in the car, and drove all day down to New Mexico partially in the pouring rain. The next morning we work up bright and early and headed out to see the beautiful balloons. It was even better than I could have imagined. There were SO many beautiful balloons. Everywhere I turned, thousands of hot air balloons. I loved every minute of it.

The Balloon Fiesta starts on Saturday, and a little part of me wishes we could sneak down there again this year. Maybe we will be able to go again someday, perhaps in a few years.

If any of you are wanting to experience the balloons this year, let me tell you a few Balloon Fiesta tips:

1. I was freezing most of the morning, because my feet were soaked from walking around in the grass. My poor Sperry's didn't work so well at keeping the water out. Next time, I will bring thicker socks and better shoes, ones that will keep out wetness.

2. I brought my tripod because I wanted to take pictures during the early morning hours of the balloon glow. Totally not worth it. Next time, I will not bring my tripod. After about 30 minutes of using it, we had to lug it around for hours afterward. And it was metal and freezing to carry. But I was really glad that I brought my nice camera. For sure, bring a camera.

3. We were pretty cold while we were there. We brought good jackets and layers but I wish I would have had gloves. Next time, I will bring gloves.

4. Last time we had to do a morning (I'm talking 4AM) run to Walmart to get some cash-back for parking, souvenirs, and treats. Next time, I will come prepared with cash. And let's see...the more cash you have, the more funnel cake you can buy!

If seeing thousands of hot air balloons, beautiful colors, and shapes sounds even remotely interesting to you, GO TO NEW MEXICO. You will not regret it. In fact you will love it. Make it a goal in life to make it down to the Balloon Fiesta someday.
